Sustainable Wallingford

learning to live on one planet with grace and joy

Last year we took walks on the third Saturday each month. Here are the walks we took last year:

March -- Getting your Garden Ready for Planting - Led by Abby Klingbeil and the Growing Food, Growing Community group. We visited the Good Shepherd P-Patch and then two neighbors who were getting their gardens ready for spring.

April -- Green Power at Home - We visited three homes that have really greened the energy in their homes. One took extra measures to improve energy efficiency, one recently installed photovoltaic and solar hot water and one has had solar hot water operating reliably since 1982. We ended by visiting a home that was just starting. We got to witness a home energy audit being conducted.

May -- Craftsman, Bungalows and More - Led by Al Elliott - A walk through the neighborhood to see some of the more interesting home architecture. Wallingford was building just as the Craftsman style hit its peak. The Wallingford Bungalow is another special part of our neighborhood. We'll see some of the finer examples -- and a few other interesting homes.

Wallingford contains many fine examples of the Craftsman style of architecture that grew out of a progressive movement started in the late nineteenth century. The goals of this movement included helping people regain connection with craftsmanship and the natural world that were being lost because of industrialization. Siting, exterior design, interior design, choice of materials, garden design all worked toward these and other goals that nurtured the human spirit.

June -- Birds and Bees - we visited three homes in Wallingford where we found city chickens, ducks and bees.

July -- Green Wallingford Businesses - we visited with four businesses that are making big contributions toward greening our neighborhood. - a restaurant that has gone organic and stresses local source and low waste - two stores that are supplying very green products - and our own neighborhood computer recycling firm.

August -- Summer Gardens - What's blooming in August? We found out how to keep our gardens in bloom all summer long and not just in the spring. Led by Laura and Jill from the Wallingford Garden Club. We visited gardens north of 50th and ended at Zoka's for a visit over pastry and coffee.

September -- Street Trees and Fruit Trees - Led by Michael Oxman. We learned about the advantages and disadvantages of different types of trees for your yard or planting strip.

October -- Wallingford Artists - We visited with two Wallingford artists to learn why they practice their craft and take ideas into the reality of form.

Frankly, each of the walks was really great.

We had from about 6 to about 30 on each walk. It seems that about 1 to 1.5 hrs is about right. Last year we started every walk at Tully's. I don’t know if we should do that this year. If we start at other places we can see more of the neighborhood. This year we are planning to walk on the third Saturday of each month from April to September (except June when the Solstice Parade is on the third Saturday).

We need some good ideas and some volunteers. Please respond to the discussion by giving us a few ideas that appeal to you. If you would be willing to volunteer to either help with organizing or guiding a walk or with the publicity, send me a message with your contact information.

I am not entirely sure if it is a good idea or not, but it might be fun do "a walk your dog" walk. Obviously only well socialized dogs and owners should attend. In my eyes, the goal for this walk is three-fold:
- to walk your dog more often,
- meet other dog owners in the hood, and
- have people without dog, that would love to own dogs, or that used to have dogs, join the walk to get some doggy love.

Maybe somebody in the hood is a dog trainer or behaviorist that would like to do give us a free lesson or give advise?
What do you think?
Goodie
Could you check around to see if you can identify a dog trainer or behaviorist we might invite to be the Walk leader?
